Today (Thursday 3 April), the UPP Foundation published a new report and launched an inquiry into widening participation, with a focus on access to higher education. The inquiry seeks to inform the government's opportunity mission and will make recommendations to government and the sector on breaking down barriers to HE, in particular reducing regional inequalities.

Responding to the announcement, Maddy Godin, Policy Adviser at the Russell Group, said:

“Access to higher education has a significant impact on the future lives and prosperity of young people. Russell Group universities are all committed to creating more chances for young people, from all backgrounds, to benefit from the opportunities that university brings. Addressing the regional disparities identified in today’s report will be a key part of removing barriers to attainment and reducing educational inequality throughout the system.

“Our universities across the UK are partnering with local schools, FE colleges and local authorities to improve pathways into higher education. This includes working with teachers, parents and directly with students to support them in their ambitions, including help with understanding their options and applying to university.

“We look forward to engaging with the UPP’s important enquiry, and working with colleagues across the sector to continue raising aspirations and increasing opportunities for students who are currently less likely to go to university. Together we can increase the rate of change on our shared ambition of widening access to education for everyone”.
